Job Description

Job Summary

Urban Bites is looking to hire a Junior Chef who can also supervise kitchen operations on a day-to-day basis. This role combines hands-on cooking with leadership responsibilities, ensuring food quality, consistency, hygiene standards, and smooth kitchen workflow. The ideal candidate is passionate about food, disciplined, organized, and capable of leading a small kitchen team during shifts.

Key ResponsibilitiesCooking & Food Preparation

• Prepare and cook menu items according to Urban Bites’ recipes and standards
• Ensure consistency in taste, portion size, and presentation
• Assist with menu execution and occasional menu development ideas
• Monitor food quality before service and during peak hours
• Ensure proper food storage and stock rotation (FIFO)

Kitchen Supervision & Operations

• Supervise kitchen staff during shifts and ensure tasks are properly assigned
• Ensure kitchen runs efficiently during service hours
• Step in to lead the kitchen when the Head Chef is unavailable
• Train new kitchen staff on recipes, kitchen rules, and hygiene standards
• Monitor staff punctuality, discipline, and teamwork in the kitchen

Hygiene, Safety & Compliance

• Maintain high standards of cleanliness and food safety at all times
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
• Conduct daily kitchen cleaning checks and enforce sanitation routines
• Ensure proper use and care of kitchen equipment

Inventory & Cost Control

• Assist in monitoring food inventory and minimizing waste
• Report low stock levels and assist with stock-taking
• Ensure ingredients are used efficiently to reduce food cost
• Help prevent pilferage and misuse of kitchen supplies

Communication & Coordination

• Work closely with the Restaurant Manager and Front-of-House team
• Communicate delays, shortages, or issues during service
• Ensure smooth coordination between kitchen and service staff

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum of 1–3 years experience in a commercial kitchen (fast casual or quick service preferred)
• Culinary training or certification is an added advantage
• Prior experience supervising kitchen staff is highly preferred
• Good understanding of food hygiene and safety practices
