Job Description
Job Summary:
The School Nurse provides primary health care services to students, staff, and visitors, promoting a healthy school environment. They assess and manage minor injuries and illnesses, administer medications with proper consent, maintain accurate health records, and support health education and preventive programs in line with Nigerian healthcare standards and school policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide first aid and emergency care for ill and injured students and staff; implement appropriate triage and referral protocols.
- Assess, document, and monitor students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies), and develop individual health plans in collaboration with parents/guardian and healthcare providers.
- Administer prescribed medications during school hours in accordance with parental consent and school policy; maintain secure medication storage and documentation.
- Conduct routine health screenings (vision, hearing, growth, BMI) as per school policy or government guidelines.
- Maintain confidential health records for all students, ensure data privacy, and comply with relevant Nigerian health information regulations.
- Promote and deliver health education and wellness programs (hygiene, nutrition, mental health, immunization awareness) to students and staff.
- Manage incidents, maintain incident reports, and coordinate with local healthcare facilities for referrals and follow-ups.
- Collaborate with school staff to identify environmental health risks (sanitation, nutrition, safety protocols) and support a safe school environment.
- Coordinate vaccination programs with public health authorities as required and track vaccination status where applicable.
- Advise school leadership on health-related policies, risk assessments, and compliance with national guidelines.
- Train and support non-clinical staff on basic first aid and emergency response procedures.
- Participate in safety drills (emergency, fire, lockdown) and ensure health services are integrated into school safety planning.
Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with current practicing license from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) or equivalent professional body.
- Additional qualification in School Health or Public Health Nursing is desirable.
- Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience; experience in pediatric/secondary school settings is a plus.
- Knowledge of basic emergency care, first aid, and CPR/AED (certificate preferred).
- Familiarity with Nigerian health regulations, immunization schedules, and common school health issues.
- Ability to assess, triage, and manage medical situations in a school setting.
